No wonder people never get around to marrying!

You pay for a marriage license, and then you pay for someone to solemnize the marriage, at which point you pay to have a marriage certificate, and god forbid someone changes their name.

I don't recall that it was very expensive or much of a hassle... but I kept my name. Draco considered changing his but we decided that would be a too much of a hassle for the same reason changing mine would.

We're going for a civil ceremony in all likelihood... I can see why people have the religious ceremonies despite not being religious.

It strikes me as really odd that someone would have a religious ceremony without being a participant in that religion. It seems mildly hypocritical to me.

We wrestled with it... our parents both have loose allegiances to the United Church... but I haven't been to a church service since I was 14 and trying to pick up a member of the congregation. It would seem wrong.

At the end of the day it's what is in my heart and mind that really counts.

Religious ceremonies are not cheap. I was married in a United church, which cost $500.00. That was in '98, the fee has gone up quite a bit since.
We did pay for a $70 fee for license but not for solemnizing the marriage and nothing for the certificate. I suppose they were included with the church.
As for the name change, I never paid anything except a $10 fee to get a SIN card with my new name. It was a more of a slight hassle to change the name on SIN, health card, bank and what not. I didn't change the name on my birth certificate. I am currently stuck with my married name because it costs $120 to change it back to my maiden name while we are separated. Once I get a divorce, it is free to change it back.
We decided on a civil ceremony. Not religious and less hassle. I don't know if I am going to stick with my maiden name or take on thechekist's when we marry. I still have plenty of time to think about that though.

They changed the rules on the name change, it costs money now to change the last name, albeit less if you do it in the first few weeks after you get married.

I'm just a little disturbed about how many times the government nails you for getting married.
