maybe you could conversationally ask him what the paint is for and/or suggest that it might not be a great idea (without telling him no or anything that comes across authoritative.

You could also try giving him a little and seeing if he'll real in a bit. As in "well I know that animal friendly paints do exist - what kind of project is this you're doing anyway?"

If he's dead set on doing this, i guess it would be best if he knew there are safer alternatives. I guess you'll have to be creative and find a way of weaving this info in without sounding like you're helping him or encouraging him in these actions
