As much as my last Professor displeased me, this one is pleasing me.

She sent out information on where to purchase the books before the class began, and e-mailed me the syllabus when I asked for it.
I also will be less stressed with the take-home exam she is having us do.

yay

"It is dangerous to condemn stories as junk which satisfy the deep hunger of millions of people. These books are not literary art, but a great deal of what is acclaimed as literary art in our time offers no comfort or fulfillment to anybody."

yes indeed. I think I'd rather gouge my eye out with a rusty spoon than read more than one Harlequin Romance in my life... though I entertain the idea of writing for it ($30,000/book?)

The ONLY way to read them IMO is to do the three star method... open to three random places in the book and read one page... if it's sex it gets a star... then try to reconstruct the plot line based on those three pages, then bask in the glory as the person who was convince you to read the book marvels at how you figured out the entire plot.

Not.
A.
Chance.

(Quick search gives, for a first-time author, $1,000-$1,500 advance and 4-6% royalty on a print run of 20,000. Given the more sales/less books trend that's going, I am suspecting that at least the print run would have dropped by now.)

Ed Greenwood did say it can take a number of years, but Harlequin has a dedicated market and they are very sure of how many books they are going to sell... with or without a known name.

They have readers who "read by number". Oh! Harlequin #4786 is out! It does do wonders for sales.
