I just ripped in to the moderator for a e-mail list called PAR-L.
The other day an e-mail went out sending links to websites like heavenishell.com and nojesuschrist.com. There were like 7 in total, all obviously created by the same person. PAR-L is supposed to be a feminist e-mail group to post, in their words
announcements of upcoming women's events or actions;
women's book publications;
feminist or women's conferences;
responses to government, business, or university about decisions affecting women;
job descriptions that are specifically oriented towards women; and
petitions that are relevant to and within Canada, provided they have been checked for validity.
I did not see "post items of religious intolerance" on that list.
I gave the moderators a few days to respond, and they did not.
I will be removing the Pride Centre from their mailing list. It is NOT acceptable to slander a person's religion under the guise of promoting women's betterment. It NEVER will be.
And I was raised an atheist. I'm personally spiritual, not religious. If I were religious, I'd be mighty damned peeved that a feminist organization allowed prejudicial material that told me that my personal beliefs were wrong and filled with lies (but that wouldn't be my fault, it would just be my fault because I had been listening to my partirarchal male oppressors too long). In my mind, in these matters, silence does mean consent. When you do not speak out as the person running the list, in my mind, you are passing along the message that you agree. That passes along the message that "it's okay".
It's not okay.
Too many people take shots at religion from other minority groups and it's not right to persecute others just because you feel that you have been persecuted in some abstract way.
I think you get the idea.
